Abstract

In this study, the effect of a pro-oxidant additive on the physico-chemical behavior of a low density polyethylene (LDPE) without anti-oxidants at different degradation times in an oven was evaluated. The films were prepared with contents of 0.5%, 1% and 2% of the pro-oxidant additive. Tensile tests, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were performed. It was found that the induction time to initiate the degradation is affected by the absence of antioxidants in the neat polymer. After this time, the amount of carbonyl and hydroxyl groups increases. These groups are formed through reactions via free radicals leading to chain scission in the amorphous regions, The crystallinity of the samples increases with time of degradation and after successive self- nucleation and annealing tests (SSA), changes in the distribution of lamellar thickness with time of degradation were observed.
