The objective of this article is to give an overview of the fundamental principles of equal channel angular pressing extrusion process, ECAP, as a technique for the production of metals and alloys of ultrafine grains, UFG. A UFG structure offers metals special mechanical characteristics, making them have outstanding performance in engineering applications. The article is composed of definitions of the most important concepts, as well as the description and the determining factors of the process. The microstructural evolution is approached and experimental results of different authors are included that illustrate the importance of this technique within the family of severe plastic deformation processes, SPD. Examples of current applications of materials processed by this technique are also included.Downloads
